Amp Commences Construction of its Bungama Battery in South Australia

Adelaide, Australia – Amp Energy (‘Amp’), a global energy transition platform backed by the Carlyle Group, announced today the commencement of construction of its Bungama Battery Energy Storage System (‘BESS’) located approximately 6 kilometres east of Port Pirie, South Australia.

Stage 1 of the multi-stage project will have a 150 MW / 300 MWh capacity and support energy security and reliability as the supply of renewable energy increases at record pace in South Australia.

Minister for Energy and Mining, Tom Koutsantonis MP, said “South Australia’s world-leading renewable energy reputation continues to attract significant investment into the state, especially in our regions. Projects like Bungama BESS not only create highly skilled jobs, they demonstrate our global standing as a leader in the green energy sector. Amp Energy joins a growing list of developers committed to South Australia’s multi-billion dollar pipeline of projects."

Amp’s President of Australia, Daniel Kim, said “Across our multi-gigawatt portfolio in Australia, Bungama BESS stage 1 is the first of our energy storage projects to reach this important milestone. We are committed to supporting South Australia achieve its ambitious net 100 per cent renewable energy target by 2027.”

“We are also delighted to be partnering with Wärtsilä and Enerven on this critical project and value their local proven track record of delivering high-performance energy storage solutions and supporting customers throughout the delivery phase and into operations,” Mr Kim said.

Amp has selected global technology group Wärtsilä to supply the BESS and provide a long-term service agreement.

Wärtsilä Energy’s Vice President of Energy Storage and Optimisation, Andy Tang, said “Our team at Wärtsilä is thrilled to collaborate with Amp Energy on its first BESS project in Australia. Building on the success of our inaugural BESS deployment in South Australia in 2023, this collaboration marks our fifth energy storage project in the country. Our partnership with Amp Energy continues our commitment to support Australia’s renewable energy goals contributing to a sustainable energy future for the region and build the scale required to service our growing BESS portfolio.”

Amp has also selected Enerven as the Balance of Plant (‘BOP’) contractor for Bungama BESS stage 1.

Enerven’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Amato, said “South Australia is where it all began for Enerven, and this project is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our capabilities locally. With five battery projects now under construction across the country, we are establishing ourselves as a leader in Australia’s energy storage market.”

Commercial operations date for Bungama BESS stage 1 is targeted for the first quarter of 2026.
