Amp is seeking a Senior Power Engineer-Grid Analysis who is eager to contribute his/her expertise in the North American Power Grid to support cost-effective renewable energy projects across the globe, with particular emphasis on the US market.

The Senior Power Engineer-Grid Analysis has responsibilities as the technical expert in matters related to the DG interconnection studies, and solar PV plant modeling by utilizing PSSE, CYME, PSCAD, and other Power Simulation platforms. The successful candidate has a working knowledge of power systems analysis, and Utility requirements in order to provide technical support. He/she proactively interacts and negotiates with the regional interconnection specialists on technical interconnection issues. The engineer will work with regional distribution/transmission system operators as well as reliability organizations. The role will provide support and guidance to both internal stakeholders such as Amp’s business development, design/engineering and operations teams, and external companies including suppliers and Utilities. This role reports to the Senior Director, Project Delivery & Engineering.

Must be legally eligible to work either in Canada or in the USA. At this time, Amp will not support a new applicant who requires additional employment authorization for this position.


  • Evaluates grid constraints at both a transmission and distribution system level in order to provide the development team focus on project location.
  • Liaises with utilities and engineering firms to facilitate and lead problem solving that identifies cost-effective technical solutions. Evaluates options for interconnection-challenged projects.
  • Identifies and evaluates solutions conforming to industry standards and electrical engineering design principles specifically in interconnecting renewable energy systems, including photovoltaic (PV) and/or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)to the larger power systems.
  • Understands the requirements to integrate a PV utility-scale power plant into the power grid including the impacts on the normal grid operations. 
  • Identifies and evaluates transmission and distribution grid requirements for various markets. 
  • Provides feasibility analysis for DG project developments and interconnection, by evaluating the existing conditions of the Local Distribution Company (“LDC”) substation and distribution/transmission infrastructure at the proposed point of common coupling. Identify corresponding interconnection risks and issues. 
  • Identifies potential cost-effective LDC system modification upgrades that may be required and should be completed prior to interconnecting the generation resource. Provides an estimated cost analysis of the possible system modification upgrade. 
  • Reviews interconnection applications, utility impact assessments and interconnection system procedures/studies with a view on identifying innovative solutions and providing an overview of the necessary steps required to obtain an Interconnection Service Agreement (“ISA”) and Wholesale Market Participate Agreement.
  • Performs and/or coordinates system analysis activities including load-flow, short-circuit, transient stability, dynamic studies, reactive deficiency study, transient stability analysis, and voltage analysis. 
  • Performs harmonic analysis as well as basic harmonic filter design analysis. 
  • Reviews power system studies for interconnection of new distribution generation, and load to the distribution and transmission system. These analytical studies include power system thermal, voltage, and reactive behavior, as well as transient, dynamic, harmonic, and short circuit
  • Prepares comprehensive reports on interconnection related studies, the study results, impacts to Amp’s projects and identifies appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Participates in interconnection scoping meetings and other negotiations with various third parties and grid authorities. 
  • Conducts site visits to understand the customer’s needs, evaluate site conditions, determine system specification and connection details, and identify the location(s) of equipment and interconnection to the site’s existing electrical system.
  • Coordinates and conducts feasibility assessments to make technology recommendations based on project site location and geographic conditions and identify the most cost-effective Solar PV designs and innovative solutions for customer facilities.


Work Experience
  • 7+ years of professional experience involved in the power System projects including Distribution, and Transmission, MV/HV Substations, Renewable generations, detail design, construction, and commissioning of a major project. Preference will be given to candidates who have a working experience with Utilities.
Expertise and Knowledge
  • Excellent knowledge of electrical design standards (CSA, IEEE, ANSI/IEC), industry standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with market-specific standards and codes such as the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program and the New York Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER). MA OESC, Market Rules, TSC/DSC)
  • Must understand Solar PV electrical concepts, codes, layout calculations, and equipment sizing.
  • Prior experience with the process of engineering drawings and documents development of new clean energy projects through the various phases of interconnection studies, permitting, and issued for construction phases is an asset.
  • Familiarity or prior experience with the design and engineering work associated with the development of clean energy storage projects, particularly solar plus storage systems, is an asset.
  • Familiarity or prior experience with battery system design, analysis, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation, and asset management is an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of power System projects including Renewable generations, Distribution and Transmission, MV/HV Substations upgrades, other grid component such as capacitor banks, SVC and Harmonic Filters.
  • Extensive knowledge of output, performance, and reliability factors of various commercially available PV modules, inverters and Energy Storage Systems.
  • Some level of hands-on construction experience.
  • Field experience in installation, start-up, and commissioning is an asset.
  • University/College degree in Electrical Engineering; preference will be given to candidates with post-graduate (Master or PhD) degrees in Power System modeling, analysis, or Planning.
  • Registered or eligible to be registered with a North American professional engineering association.
  • Proficient in the use of two or more of the following software packages: PSCAD, EMTP, PSS/e, ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner, SKM/PTW, CYME, EasyPower, PVsyst.
  • Proven proficiency with the PSS®E software package as well as PSCAD network simulations, with a particular focus on the detailed modeling of renewable power sources and carrying out load-flow, short-circuit, and transient stability analysis.
  • Knowledge of alternative planning software applications is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook required.
  • Familiar with AutoCAD and other graphical skills.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as you will be working in a team environment.
  • Highly organized and skillful at working on multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to prioritize multiple and often competing activities.
  • Able to prioritize multiple, often competing priorities.

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to coach/influence others.
  • Minimum three years of experience in project finance, financial modeling, investment banking or related field. 
  • Experience in energy generation and knowledge of renewable energy preferred.
